Behind the Book: The Shea Nature Camp Series

THE SHEA NATURE CAMP SERIES

When I published Up to Bat for Nana's Place in 2019, I didn't envision any further adventures for Bret Collier and Jami Shea. Yet,  as I continued to develop my writing, I realized the characters were begging to tell the next part of their story. After all, Jami and Bret raised nearly $50,000 to fund the creation of Shea Nature Camp. Wouldn't it be fun to tell the story of their first campers?

At first, I thought about bringing campers in from across the country and weaving their stories together. Instead, after researching poverty, education, and drug addiction issues in eastern Kentucky communities deep in the Appalachians, I saw an opportunity to blend two worlds by bringing test campers from the fictional town of Hamel to Shea Nature Camp on Sanibel Island. The plot lines for books two, three, and four of the series began to evolve.

Mixed with a bit of innocent young romance, a baseball pitching duel, secret spy stuff, and the chance for a poor mountain town to start a new chapter in its history, the Shea Nature Camp Series is a fun read for boys and girls in grades 3-6.
